Skimmers — frequently asked questions

Standard skimmer or wide-mouth?

The standard skimmer (SKIM-1, throat 200 × 140 mm, 15-litre basket, flap weir and vacuum plate) is the proven choice for most residential pools. The wide-mouth version captures a broader band of surface water per unit — specify it for large surface areas, heavy leaf fall from surrounding planting, or a prevailing wind that pushes debris to one end. The compact Mini Skimmer (SKIM-2, throat 148 × 143 mm) suits spas and small pools.

How many skimmers does a pool need?

Count from the water surface and the wind: every pool needs at least one, placed on the downwind side so the wind drives floating debris towards it, and large or L-shaped pools need more so no part of the surface is more than a few metres from a skimmer. Our engineers size the count from your pool drawing when you request a quotation.

Concrete or liner version?

Concrete versions cast into the wall shuttering and tile in flush with the finish. Liner versions (the -L models) add a flange and gasket set that clamps the membrane from both sides. The throat extensions SKIM-01 and SKIM-02 lengthen the throat where the finished wall thickness places the body further back from the pool face.

Can I vacuum the pool through the skimmer?

Yes — the standard skimmer ships with a vacuum plate. Lift out the basket, seat the plate, and connect the vacuum hose to it so the pump draws through the vacuum head. Set the multiport valve to Waste when vacuuming heavy dirt so it is not pushed into the sand bed.
