Junction Boxes — frequently asked questions

What is the junction box for?

It is the waterproof enclosure where the 12 V cable from each underwater light meets the cable from the safety isolating transformer. Mounted above the waterline, it keeps every connection dry and lets a light be disconnected for service without touching the transformer.

Where is it mounted?

On the deck or wall near each light, above the maximum water level, with the light cable rising continuously from the niche to the box so there is no low point where water can collect. One box per light cable run is the usual practice.

Can mains cables be connected inside it?

No. The box is for the low-voltage 12 V side only. The 220 V supply stops at the safety isolating transformer in the plant room.
