Sand and gravel do different jobs
The 0.4–0.8 mm silica sand is the filtering layer. In the commercial filters, a 1–2 mm gravel layer sits underneath it: it is a support layer, not a filtering layer. It keeps the sand off the collector laterals and spreads the backwash flow evenly. The 0.8–1.2 mm sand is not a substitute for the support gravel.
Use graded silica sand only
Never use builder's sand or unwashed sand: it channels, clouds the water and can damage the laterals.
Order silica sand from our Filtration Media page. For support gravel, contact sales@waterstar.com.eg.
